ATEX Lighting Zones

ATEX lighting zones are regulations for lighting in areas where there is a risk of explosion or fire. There are three zones:

  • Zone 0 is the most hazardous with an explosive atmosphere present continuously.
  • Zone 1 is less hazardous but still presents a significant risk, with an explosive atmosphere present for short periods.
  • Zone 2 is the least hazardous, where an explosive atmosphere is unlikely to occur under normal operating conditions.

Zone 2:1 and Zone 2:2 are subcategories of Zone 2.

  • Zone 2:1 refers to areas where a hazardous atmosphere is limited to a specific location
  • Zone 2:2 refers to areas where a hazardous atmosphere is likely to occur under abnormal operating conditions. Lighting equipment used in these zones must be designed to prevent ignition of the surrounding atmosphere.

It’s important to understand the appropriate ATEX lighting zone classification for your workplace and ensure that suitable lighting equipment is used to prevent explosions or fires.
